Cartagena was the perfect conclusion to my five-country adventure across South America. This city pulses with vibrant energy, where every corner seemed alive with color, music, and history. From its picturesque colonial architecture to its breathtaking beaches, Cartagena charmed me in ways I’ll never forget.
Here is how I spent three days in this vibrant city.
Strolling Through the City Center - (Centro Histórico de Cartagena)
On my arrival early that morning, I immediately checked in and began my exploration. Wandering the cobblestone streets of Cartagena’s city center felt like stepping into a kaleidoscope of colors. Colonial buildings painted in bold colors. The yellows, pinks, and blues were adorned with blooming bougainvillea, the iron balconies casting intricate shadows. I started my exploration at the iconic Clock Tower, the bustling heart of the city, sipping on fresh coconut water and other fruits from a street vendor. Each turn revealed something magical—hidden courtyards, street performers, or a vendor selling refreshing paletas (ice pops) in tropical flavors like guava and passion fruit. The warmth of the locals made the city feel welcoming at every step. From the city center, I tried to walk through some of the more trendier neighborhoods.

San Diego: A Neighborhood Full of Stories

My first neighborhood was San Diego on my list was San Diego. This neighborhood had a special kind of charm. Its narrow alleys brimmed with artisan shops, vibrant street art, and cozy eateries. I found myself at El Patio, a tiny family-run spot where the arepas were life-changing—crispy, golden, and stuffed with cheese and avocado. Chatting with the owner, I learned about Colombia’s love affair with arepas, each region boasting its own version.
The highlight of San Diego was the sense of community. Watching kids play soccer in the plaza and artists painting murals in real-time reminded me of how alive this neighborhood truly is.
Getsemani: Cartagena’s Creative Soul
Next on my list was the neighborhood that stole my heart, Getsemani. This neighborhood is a living canvas, its walls adorned with murals telling stories of Cartagena’s culture, resilience, and joy. A walking tour brought these stories to life as our guide explained the significance behind each piece. I ended my afternoon at Café del Mural, sipping on rich Colombian coffee while surrounded by the work of local artists. The neighborhood came alive at night, with music spilling from every plaza and locals inviting me to dance. It was impossible not to get swept up in the rhythm of the city.

Umbrella Street: A Burst of Color

Next was the famous Calle de las Sombrillas, or Umbrella Street. It was like something out of a dream and a must see on your visit. A canopy of brightly colored umbrellas floated overhead, casting playful shadows on the street below. I took way too many photos here, trying to capture the joyful chaos of colors. As I wandered, I sampled local treats like cocadas—sweet coconut candies—and crunchy empanadas filled with spiced chicken (there was beef as well). The combination of vivid sights and mouthwatering flavors made this one of my favorite spots in the city.
Unwinding at Plaza San Felipe

Eventually, my exploration led me to Plaza San Felipe, a tranquil square surrounded by historic buildings. It serves as a peaceful spot to relax and reflect. Grab a scoop of locally made ice cream and take a seat on one of the benches, perfect for people-watching.
As evening fell, the plaza transformed into a vibrant gathering place filled with music and laughter. I found myself engaging with locals and fellow travelers; the warm atmosphere made it an ideal setting to forge new connections. Lucky my hotel was just a short walk away to cap my day.
Isla Barú and Playa Blanca: Paradise Found
The next day began with a peaceful escape into nature at Aviari National Park, a haven for bird lovers like me. Wandering its lush trails, I was serenaded by the songs of over 300 bird species. Spotting a scarlet ibis with its fiery plumage felt magical, and seeing pink flamingos gracefully roam their habitat added to the wonder. It was a serene start, connecting me to Colombia’s incredible wildlife.
By mid-morning, I arrived at Isla Barú, where time seemed to slow down. Playa Blanca greeted me with powdery white sands and shimmering turquoise waters, a scene straight from a postcard. Snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters was a dream—I marveled at vibrant coral reefs and schools of tropical fish weaving through the waves.
The day wouldn’t have been complete without sampling the island’s fresh seafood. Grilled snapper paired with coconut rice and crispy fried plantains became an instant favorite. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I sat by the water, soaking in the tranquility of this paradise. It was a moment of pure bliss, that will be forever cherished.

Marbella: A Serene Seaside Escape
My last morning before my evening flight was spent in the beach side neighborhood of Marbella. I strolled along the quiet beach, letting the cool Caribbean breeze sweep over me. The sea shimmered under the midday sun, and I couldn’t resist lounging under the swaying palm trees. If you decide to visit the neighborhood consider renting a paddleboard to venture out onto the tranquil waters. Rumor has it that spotting dolphins playing in the distance is not uncommon. Make sure to snap a few pictures, as experiencing these majestic animals in their natural habitat is truly unforgettable. On my walk back, I grabbed a fresh mango sprinkled with lime and chili from a beach vendor, savoring it while watching the waves roll in and admire the sand artwork made by the locals.
