As someone who has traveled to over 60 countries—90% of them solo—safety is always at the forefront of my mind. While I have visited places where I had to stay on high alert, I have never truly felt in imminent danger. However, some destinations have stood out as exceptionally safe, allowing me to explore freely without feeling the need to constantly watch my back.
Here are the countries where I felt the safest as a minority female solo traveler:
1. Norway (Especially the Northern Areas)
Norway, particularly its northern regions, felt incredibly secure. Whether I was wandering through Tromsø’s charming streets, chasing the northern lights in Alta, or exploring the Lofoten Islands, I never felt uneasy. The locals were warm and helpful, and the crime rates in these areas were remarkably low. Solo travelers can walk around at night with peace of mind, and the overall atmosphere is one of trust and kindness.
2. Iceland (The Entire Country)
Iceland is known for its breathtaking landscapes, but what truly makes it stand out is its sense of security. Whether in Reykjavik or driving solo through remote areas, I never once felt unsafe. Hitchhiking is common, and locals are known for their honesty and willingness to help. The country has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, making it a haven for solo travelers.
3. Canada (The Entire Country)
From the vibrant cities to the vast wilderness, Canada exudes safety. Whether in Toronto, Vancouver, or small towns in the Rockies, I found people to be polite, friendly, and respectful. The country’s reputation for kindness is well-earned, and I always felt welcome as a solo traveler. Public transportation felt secure, and even at night, I was never uncomfortable walking alone.
4. Slovenia (The Entire Country)
Slovenia is one of Europe’s hidden gems, and it also happens to be one of the safest countries I’ve visited. Ljubljana, the capital, is a charming and compact city with an incredibly low crime rate. The countryside, from Lake Bled to Triglav National Park, felt equally secure. The locals were welcoming, and I never once felt out of place or threatened.
5. Denmark (Especially Copenhagen)
Copenhagen is a dream for solo travelers. It’s well-organized, has an excellent public transport system, and is filled with friendly people who are more than willing to help if needed. Walking or biking around the city at night felt perfectly safe, and there was an overall sense of ease wherever I went.
6. Switzerland (Especially Eastern and Southern Towns/Cities)
Switzerland’s picturesque cities and towns, particularly Lucerne, Lauterbrunnen, St. Moritz, Lugano, and Interlaken, provided me with an unmatched sense of security. The serene landscapes, well-maintained infrastructure, and respectful culture made traveling alone a breeze. Whether exploring mountain trails, historic sites, or charming villages, I always felt at ease.
7. Austria (Especially Western Towns)
Western Austria, including towns like Innsbruck and Salzburg, felt incredibly safe. The country’s efficient transportation, polite locals, and overall sense of order made it an easy and worry-free destination for solo travel. Whether hiking in the Alps or strolling through historic streets, I always felt at ease.
8. Ireland & Scotland
Both Ireland and Scotland are known for their hospitality, and I can personally attest to the warmth of the people. Whether in Dublin, Edinburgh, or the remote countryside, I encountered nothing but kindness. The sense of community in these countries made me feel protected, and I never had any safety concerns, even when wandering off the beaten path.
Final Thoughts
Solo travel as a minority female can come with challenges, but these countries have given me the peace of mind to truly enjoy my adventures without constantly being on edge. While it’s always important to exercise caution no matter where you go, these destinations have proven to be some of the safest places in the world for independent travelers.
If you’re considering solo travel and safety is your top priority, I highly recommend adding these countries to your list. Have you visited any of these places? Where have you felt the safest as a solo traveler? I’d love to hear your experiences!
