Chicago: The First Stop on My Train Ride Across America

I’ve always been fascinated by Chicago—the architecture, culture, and vibrant city life. When planning my train ride across the U.S., I decided to spend three nights in the Windy City to experience as much as possible. With packed days and little time in my hotel, I dove headfirst into this dynamic city.

Day 1: Arrival and Urban Exploration

Union Station & Hotel Check-In

I arrived at Union Station around 9:30 AM and took a quick cab ride to my hotel, the Crown Plaza - West Loop. After checking in and freshening up, my Chicago adventure began.

Maxwell Street Market

First stop: the iconic Maxwell Street Market, a 20-minute walk from the hotel. Known as the nation’s longest-running open-air market, this Friday and Sunday tradition is perfect for bargain hunting and amazing street food. I browsed stalls offering everything from antiques to clothing and indulged in delicious tacos.

Chinatown

After two hours, I walked about 45 minutes to Chinatown, a vibrant neighborhood filled with colorful shops and restaurants. I explored tea shops (tea lover here!) and souvenir stores before treating myself to bubble tea and a duck sandwich. Pro tip: many places are cash-only, so come prepared. Tired but content, I caught a cab back to the hotel to rest.

Day 2: Scenic Trails and Iconic Parks

The Chicago Riverwalk

The day started at Lake Street, near the Old Post Office Plaque, where I joined the Chicago Riverwalk Trail. This scenic path is perfect for admiring downtown’s architectural marvels while enjoying the river views. Restaurants, bars, and kayak rental spots line the trail, creating a lively atmosphere. I walked for about 30 minutes, ending at the DuSable Harbor near Navy Pier.

Lakefront Trail

The Riverwalk transitions seamlessly into the Lakefront Trail, an 18.5-mile path offering breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline. Passing through Grant Park, Lincoln Park, and other landmarks, the trail is ideal for walking, biking, or simply enjoying the scenery. I spent two hours strolling, taking photos, and savoring ice cream before relaxing on the beach at the 31st Street Harbor.

Millennium Park

After an Uber ride back, I stopped at Cafe Michelle for Mediterranean takeout, then headed to Millennium Park. This iconic Chicago landmark is home to famous attractions like The Bean, the Crown Fountain, and the BP Pedestrian Bridge. I spent two hours soaking in the views and marveling at the city’s artistry and green spaces.

Grant Park & Buckingham Fountain

Just a 15-minute walk away, Grant Park offered another stunning oasis in the heart of downtown. Its crowning jewel, Buckingham Fountain, was mesmerizing. After exploring sculptures and lake views, I wrapped up the day with leisurely strolls and countless photos.

Day 3: Gardens, Shopping, and the River Cruise

Chicago Botanic Garden

A 30-minute cab ride took me to the sprawling Chicago Botanic Garden, a serene 350-acre retreat. I started with breakfast at the Garden View Café, enjoying stunning views from the balcony. With nearly 30 gardens connected by walkways, I explored highlights like the Japanese Gardens, Waterfall Garden, Butterfly Gardens, and the Prairie Gardens. The peaceful surroundings and vibrant displays made it hard to leave after four hours.

Magnificent Mile

Back in the city, I wandered along the Magnificent Mile, Chicago’s premier shopping district. I window-shopped, people-watched, and soaked in the lively energy before heading to Navy Pier.

Navy Pier

This bustling attraction on Lake Michigan offers endless entertainment, from the Children’s Museum to Chicago’s Eye. Though my time here was brief, the vibrant atmosphere left a lasting impression.

Architecture River Cruise

For my final evening in Chicago, I boarded an Architecture River Cruise from Navy Pier, and it was the perfect send-off. With a full bar, a charismatic guide, and spectacular views of illuminated skyscrapers, the evening was unforgettable.

Day 4: Farewell, Chicago

Before continuing my journey, I explored the West Loop and enjoyed a final Chicago meal. Then it was back to Union Station to catch my next train, already nostalgic for this incredible city.

Reflections

Chicago exceeded my expectations with its vibrant neighborhoods, breathtaking architecture, and welcoming vibe. Though I packed my days full, I feel like I’ve only scratched the surface. It’s safe to say, this won’t be my last visit to the Windy City.
