Quebec is a province of wonders, from the incredible natural beauty to the charming historic streets, Quebec is a destination full of surprises. I spent a few unforgettable days exploring the province’s highlights—from the dramatic Montmorency Falls to the enchanting streets of Old Quebec City. If you’re planning a trip, here’s a glimpse into my journey through this winter wonderland.
Quebec City: A Journey Through Time
Walking through Old Quebec City (Vieux-Québec) felt like stepping into a European fairy tale, with its cobblestone streets and centuries-old buildings. The city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is an absolute gem, and there’s so much to explore.
The Citadel was one of the first stops on my itinerary. Perched on a hill overlooking the city and the St. Lawrence River, this fortress is full of history and offers spectacular views. As I walked around the walls, I couldn’t help but imagine what it must have been like in the days of the French and British empires.
Just below the Citadel lies the iconic Dufferin Terrace, which overlooks the river and offers fantastic views of Château Frontenac. If you’re lucky, you might catch a beautiful sunset over the St. Lawrence River, like I did. I also walked along Rue Saint-Louis and Rue Saint-Jean, two of Quebec City's most famous streets, full of vibrant shops, cozy cafés, and charming restaurants. The atmosphere here is undeniably European, and I found myself pausing at every corner to take in the sights and sounds.
While wandering through Old Quebec, I stopped at the Monument Samuel de Champlain, a tribute to the founder of Quebec City. It was a great spot to reflect on the city’s deep historical roots.
Other Must-Sees in Quebec City
There’s so much more to Quebec City that it’s hard to list it all! A few more highlights that I highly recommend include:
Place d'Armes: This square near Château Frontenac is perfect for taking in the architecture and the lively atmosphere. It’s also home to some of the best restaurants in the city.
The Plains of Abraham: A beautiful park that played a pivotal role in the Battle of Quebec. Whether you’re walking through it in winter or summer, the views and history are incredible.
Petit-Champlain: This quaint neighborhood is a must for anyone looking to experience the charm of Old Quebec. With its narrow streets and colorful buildings, it’s one of the most picturesque spots in the city.
Montmorency Falls: A Majestic Start to My Adventure
The moment I arrived at Montmorency Falls, I was left speechless. Located just outside of Quebec City, this magnificent waterfall is taller than Niagara Falls, cascading 83 meters (272 feet) into the river below. During the winter, the falls take on a magical quality, surrounded by sparkling ice and snow, making it feel like I was stepping into a winter fairy tale. I spent the morning at the falls, marveling at the frozen mist that swirled in the air. You can hike up to a viewing platform for a panoramic view or, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a cable car for a unique perspective. I also ventured out onto the suspended bridge that crosses the falls—an experience that left me breathless (literally and figuratively!). Whether you're visiting in winter or summer, the falls are a must-see for any traveler.
Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré: A Peaceful Pilgrimage
After soaking in the natural beauty of Montmorency Falls, I made my way to Saint-Anne-de-Beaupré, just a short drive away. Known for the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, this place holds great spiritual significance, and its beauty is simply overwhelming. The basilica’s intricate stained glass windows and grand architecture made me pause in awe. It's one of the oldest pilgrimage sites in North America, and I felt a deep sense of peace while walking through its serene grounds.
For those interested in history and architecture, this is an incredible spot. I also visited the nearby Way of the Cross, a quiet walking path with several stations that takes you up the hill behind the basilica, offering views of the surrounding countryside.
Ice Hotel: A Truly Unique Stay
No trip to Quebec would be complete without a visit to the Ice Hotel, or Hôtel de Glace, located just a short distance from the city. Staying in a hotel made entirely of ice and snow was a surreal experience. From the ice sculptures in the lobby to the icy beds draped in furs, everything about this hotel was beyond cool (pun intended!).
Even if you’re not planning on spending the night, the Ice Hotel is worth a visit. The rooms are decorated with stunning ice art, and you can sip a cocktail at the ice bar or wander through the chilly hallways adorned with colorful lights. I also got to enjoy a snow tubing adventure, which added a fun, playful touch to my visit. If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable experience, the Ice Hotel should be on your list!
Final Thoughts
Quebec is a destination that truly captivated my heart. Whether you're marveling at the power of Montmorency Falls, immersing yourself in history in Old Quebec, or experiencing the icy wonder of the Ice Hotel, there’s something here for everyone. I left Quebec with unforgettable memories of its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and welcoming people. If you're planning a winter getaway or just want to experience something magical, Quebec should definitely be at the top of your list. I know I'll be back again someday to explore even more of what this beautiful province has to offer.
