A Coast-to-Coast Train Adventure Across America

Embarking on one of America’s most iconic train journeys from New York City to California is nothing short of extraordinary. Spanning 3,400 miles, this coast-to-coast adventure includes two unforgettable legs: the Lake Shore Limited (NYC to Chicago) and the California Zephyr (Chicago to California).

Travelers have two options for this journey: a nonstop four-day expedition or a flexible rail pass, allowing you to hop on and off at destinations along the way. I chose the latter, crafting my adventure with unique stops that made each segment special.

Leg 1: New York to Chicago (19h 10m)

The journey begins aboard the Lake Shore Limited, which offers stunning views of the Hudson River. Sitting on the left side of the train, I enjoyed breathtaking sights of Storm King Mountain, West Point Military Academy, Bannerman’s Island, and its castle. The train meanders past Albany, along Lake Erie and Lake Michigan, offering glimpses of aquatic birds and riverside landscapes.

While New York's scenery was captivating, the ride through Ohio and Indiana felt less eventful. Despite moments of beauty, like a bridge in Indiana and a vivid sunset, this stretch lacked inspiration. Relief washed over me as we pulled into Chicago's Union Station, a historic landmark with its grand hall and iconic Canal Street entrance.

I spent three nights exploring Chicago, soaking in its vibrant culture before continuing westward.

Leg 2: Chicago to Denver (18h 15m)

Boarding the California Zephyr in Chicago, the train rolled through Iowa and Nebraska under the night sky. While photo opportunities were limited, I managed to capture the train crossing the Mississippi River and a stunning Iowa sunset. The next morning, I woke up in Denver, greeted by the grandeur of its Historical Union Station.

In Denver, I stayed for a night to explore the Mile High City before continuing my westward journey.

Leg 3 & Leg 4: Denver to Salt Lake City (15h), Salt Lake City to Reno (9h 55m)

This leg of the journey is often hailed as one of the most scenic train rides in the world. From Denver, the California Zephyr climbs into the Colorado Rockies, traveling through mountain tunnels, winding canyons, and along the Colorado River. The route boasts historic charm, passing Gold Rush ghost towns, stagecoach stations, and the heart of America’s mining history.

Highlights included Gore Canyon, Glenwood Canyon’s towering cliffs, and glimpses of wildlife like deer and bunnies. Along the Colorado River, I even witnessed the infamous “moon river” tradition, where rafters give passing trains a cheeky salute.

After breathtaking vistas, the train descended into Nevada, where my journey ended in Reno.

Leg 5: Reno to Emeryville, CA (7h 34m)

While the full coast-to-coast route continues to Emeryville, California, I opted to conclude my rail adventure in Reno to begin a road trip through America’s majestic national parks.

Reflections on the Journey

This train adventure offers a blend of iconic landmarks, scenic beauty, and a touch of historical intrigue. While the long stretches tested my patience, the stops along the way turned the journey into a rich tapestry of experiences.

Would I do it again? Absolutely—but only with the freedom to break up the trip and soak in the diverse landscapes and cultures along the way.
